OwnWork HQ is an independent publication that helps US freelancers, consultants and solopreneurs make sense of the business side of working for themselves: insurance, taxes, business setup and the tools that keep a one-person business running.
Who we are
OwnWork HQ was founded by Joel López, who researches and writes our guides. Joel is not a licensed financial advisor, insurance agent, attorney or CPA. Our role is to research official sources and present them clearly so you can make informed decisions and know which questions to ask a licensed professional.
What we cover
- Insurance: general liability, professional liability, health insurance and more, by profession.
- Taxes: quarterly estimated taxes, deductions, 1099 forms and self-employment tax.
- Business setup: LLCs, S corps, EINs, contracts and pricing.
- Tools & software: invoicing, accounting, banking and credit cards for freelancers.
- Retirement & benefits: Solo 401(k), SEP IRA and other options.
Our editorial standards
- Official sources first. We rely on the IRS, state agencies and primary data from insurers and providers, and we link to them in every guide.
- Dated and updated. Each article shows when it was last updated. We review figures that change often, such as tax limits, prices and card offers.
- Independent. Companies cannot pay to be included or to change our conclusions.
- Honest about limits. Our content is educational and is not personalized advice. See our Disclaimer.
How we make money
OwnWork HQ is free to read. We may earn revenue from display advertising (such as Google AdSense) and, in some cases, from affiliate links. If you buy a product through some links, we may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects which products we recommend. Details are in our Disclaimer & affiliate disclosure.
